How can students be tested before they are taught?
Whilst we are against ‘teaching to the test’, we believe that tests are valuable tools that help students learn. Our tests provide reliable, relevant, accurate, authentic, valid and objective assessment tools and influence teaching and learning processes. To give a concrete example, students have been tested before being taught for a long time. The test-teach-test approach (TTT) is a traditional lesson format, during which the first ‘test’ stage introduces the context and tests the students’ existing knowledge, the ‘teach’ stage focuses on the gaps in the student’s knowledge the first ‘test’ stage has revealed. The second ‘test’ stage tests the newly acquired knowledge of the students and, with that, the effectiveness of the ‘teach’ stage.
