How is the IELTS Speaking Test scored?

The IELTS Speaking Test is scored across four criteria, each carrying equal weight:
  1. Fluency and Coherence – How well the candidate speaks without hesitation, organises ideas, and maintains flow.
  2. Lexical Resource – The range and accuracy of vocabulary used.
  3. Grammatical Range and Accuracy – The variety and correctness of grammar structures.
  4. Pronunciation – Clarity of speech, including intonation and word stress.
Each criterion is scored from Band 0 to 9, and the average of the four gives the overall Speaking band score.
